Sales Tax

Manage sales tax collection, reporting, and filing.

Sales Tax Nexus

You have nexus (obligation to collect sales tax) when you:

  • Have physical presence in a state
  • Exceed economic nexus thresholds ($100,000 sales or 200 transactions)
  • Have employees or inventory in a state
  • Attend trade shows or events

Setting Up Sales Tax

  1. Go to Tax → Sales Tax
  2. Click "Add Tax Jurisdiction"
  3. Select state and locality
  4. Enter tax registration number
  5. Set tax rate (auto-populated)
  6. Configure filing frequency
  7. Enable automatic calculation

Tax Rates

SyncBooks maintains current rates for:

  • State sales tax
  • County tax
  • City tax
  • Special district taxes
  • Combined rates by ZIP code

Exemptions

  • Tax-exempt customers (nonprofits, resellers)
  • Tax-exempt products (groceries, medicine)
  • Upload exemption certificates
  • Track certificate expiration dates

Filing and Remittance

  • Automatic calculation of tax due
  • Generate sales tax returns
