Setting Up Payment Methods: A Guide for Ghanaian Businesses

Cash, mobile money, card, bank transfer, crypto — today's businesses accept payments in more ways than ever. Here's how to configure them all in one place.

Payment preferences in Ghana are changing fast. Five years ago, cash was king. Today, mobile money dominates, card payments are growing, and even crypto is emerging. Your business needs to accept what customers want to pay with — and track it all properly.

The Payment Landscape in Ghana (2026)

  • Mobile Money: 65% of transactions (MTN MoMo leading)
  • Cash: 20% (still dominant for small purchases)
  • Card: 10% (growing fast with POS terminals)
  • Bank Transfer: 4% (mostly B2B)
  • Other (crypto, gift cards, store credit): 1% (emerging)
  • Why Centralized Payment Method Config Matters

    Without a central config:

  • Your POS shows "Cash, Card, Mobile Money" but expenses have 5 options
  • Receipt forms show different methods than payment recording
  • Reporting can't aggregate properly because method names are inconsistent
  • New payment options require code changes in 10 different places
  • How SyncBooks Centralizes It

    One Setting, Everywhere

    1. Go to Settings → Company → Payment Settings

    2. Check the methods you accept (14 options available)

    3. Set a default

    4. Save

That's it. Every form in the app — expenses, receipts, POS, payments, recurring expenses — shows only your selected methods. Consistent naming, consistent reporting.

    Available Methods

  • Cash
  • Bank Transfer
  • Mobile Money (MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo)
  • Card (Debit/Credit)
  • Cheque
  • Direct Debit
  • Online Payment
  • Paystack (integrated payment links)
  • Stripe
  • PayPal
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Store Credit
  • Gift Card
  • Other
  • POS-Specific

In the POS terminal, your accepted methods appear as quick-tap buttons. The cashier taps the right one — no dropdown hunting. If you have 3 methods, you see 3 buttons. If you have 8, they wrap responsively.

    Best Practices

  • 1.Only enable what you actually use — fewer options = faster checkout
  • 2.Set the most common method as default — saves one click every time
  • 3.Enable Gift Card only after setting up gift cards in POS Settings
  • 4.Use "Other" sparingly — it makes reporting vague
  • 5.Review quarterly — add new methods as you adopt them
  • Reporting Benefits

With consistent method names across all transactions, your reports can show:

  • Revenue breakdown by payment method
  • Which payment methods are growing
  • Average transaction size by method
  • Mobile money vs cash trends over time
  • All automatically, because every transaction uses the same standardized method values.
